Jacquard

A mechanism used in knitting or weaving that allows the production of fancy stitches and weaves or elaborate patterning on the surface of the textile, similar to the mechanism in a music box or player piano. Modern electronic jacquards work in conjunction with a computer design system and allow quick pattern and structural changes.

Jersey

In machine knitting, plain knit fabric, formed on one set of needles. In hand knitting called “knit”; on the reverse side the stitch formation is called “purl”.

Jobber

A person or company who buys textiles from manufacturers, mills, importers in quantity, as well as overruns and unused sample yardage and re-sells them to wholesalers, retailers and smaller garment manufacturers.
