Importer of Record

The company or individual who is listed as the importer with U.S. Customs at the time the goods are entered into the U.S. The Tax ID # or Social Security # of the “Importer of Record” must also be submitted to Customs.

Inspection Certificate

A document that certifies that merchandise was in good condition and as specified in a contract prior to shipment. Often obtained from an independent testing organization.

Intarsia

A knitting process where different colors or yarns are inlaid within the body of the knitted panel so that they are contained in that specific design element or motif. The reverse side of an intarsia design will be single knitting throughout without floats or double knitting. Intarsias can be done by hand-frame knitting or on special intarsia machines.

Interfacing

A woven or non-woven material used between layers of fabric to change or improve the stylistic qualities of that section of the garment, or to improve durability and resistance to creasing, wrinkling or “drooping.” Typical areas using interfacings are collars, cuffs, front openings, hems and lapels.

Fusible Interfacings are attached to the garment sections or facings using high heat to temporarily melt a backing adhesive. The attachment to the garment is relatively permanent unless the garment is subjected to the same level of heat.

Sew-in Interfacings are sandwiched between the layers of fabric during the construction process and “float.” They do not change the hand or appearance of the fashion fabric, but add body or support.

Interlining

Provides additional weight and warmth in strategic areas of a garment.

Interlock

A specific double-knit circular knit fabric that can be piece-dyed or printed. The front and back of the fabric will appear the same (as plain jersey). It is versatile, tailors well and is more stable, though heavier, than plain jersey fabrics.
